Earlier this morning I purchased Escape from New York on Blu Ray from eBay. A tad overpriced I might add, but I didn’t have time to shop around (or couldn’t be bothered, to be more accurate).
Fast forward 6 hours and I decided to start a blog about 80’s action movies called ‘Sexual Tyrannosaurus’.
This wasn’t an impulsive decision though. In fact, I’d been meaning to start this blog for a couple of months now. You see, 80’s action movies are a passion of mine. Not a week goes by that I don’t watch a movie from that era, and not a day goes by that I don’t Google some weird facts about them. And I’m always spurting out cheesy one-liners picked right out of these gems to my wife and friends.
They used to hate it, but now they’ve learned to love it (I think).
So that begs the question, why 80’s action movies? Well if you’re reading this blog in the first place, then you know exactly why – because they’re fucking awesome!
I remember being a kid back in the early 90’s, way before DVDs, Netflix and iTunes, when the only way to record a movie was with a VCR player,
I had tapes upon tapes of action movies that I would have to rewind or fast-forward so that I could watch the next one. Most of which even featured the advert breaks that happened during its recording. Imagine that!
My mum was pretty cool about me watching action movies from a very young age. She would let me stay up and watch The Terminator, Die Hard and Universal Soldier, sometimes even on a school night. And after school when my granddad would pick me up and take me back home whilst my mum finished work, I would put on those VCR recordings and sit cross-legged on the floor like… well, a little school kid.
I’m now 35 years old and I still watch the same films. Only school has been replaced with work (boo!), my granddad (RIP) has been replaced with my wife and those VCR tapes have been replaced with Blu Rays and DVDs.
And in an age full of movies caked in CGI, 3+ hour run times and former WWE wrestlers, I still get my kicks by turning back the clock and watching those 80’s action movie classics.
I’m not the first person to create a blog about 80’s action movies, and I most certainly won’t be the last. But I figure, ‘why the hell not?’ I like writing and I like 80’s action movies, so why not combine the two?!
Escape from New York won’t be delivered for a few days yet, and in that time I’ve set myself the goal of getting a couple of half-decent blogs up that I’m hoping any action hero fan (80’s or not) will enjoy taking the time to read. Although I’m pretty sure that for the next few weeks the only people visiting this blog will be me.
But everyone has to start somewhere, right?
And yes, ‘Sexual Tyrannosaurus’ is straight out of one of my favourite action movies of all time, Predator. And if you don’t like Predator then we’re going have some serious problems right off the bat.
